New York City Makes History with Opening of First Recreational Marijuana Dispensary

On Thursday, February 24th, 2023, New York City made history by opening its first recreational marijuana dispensary. Legally Rooted, a locally-owned and operated medical marijuana dispensary became the first cannabis supplier in the state to open for business.[0] The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by many, symbolizing the courageous step taken by the state to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older.

This momentous event comes a year after the state legalized marijuana for recreational use, and is expected to be one of the country’s most profitable markets for cannabis yet.[1] In addition, the amendment adopted on Thursday allows medical cannabis patients to grow up to four plants for personal use, instead of the two plants allowed under the current law.

Furthermore, both adults and medical patients are now able to purchase plants and other cultivation supplies through the licensed market.[2] After meeting with their healthcare provider and satisfying the necessary criteria, patients are now able to purchase cannabis products and are allowed to grow up to four plants at home.

The legalization of marijuana in New York City is a big step towards the decriminalization of cannabis, and is sure to have a positive effect on the economy. This news has been welcomed by many who are excited to see the progress being made towards a more accepting society.
