Missouri Legalizes Recreational Marijuana Use: What You Need to Know
On February 16, 2023, Missouri became the latest state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, following the passing of Amendment 3.[0] This marks a significant reduction in how marijuana is regulated in the state, with adults 21 and over now able to purchase up to three ounces of marijuana per transaction.[1] The bill also includes punishments for growers who leave cannabis in an area where they should reasonably expect a person under 21 years old may gain access to it.[2]
If plants are cultivated in public view, cultivators may risk a fine of up to $250 and be required to relinquish them.[1] If the same offense is committed three times, the crime can be elevated to a misdemeanor.[1] Despite cannabis being federally illegal, more states are legalizing and decriminalizing marijuana, with a study in 2019 estimating that around 18% of U.S. adults used marijuana that year.[3]
