CBD Increases THC Effects, Veterans’ Affairs Research on Cannabis Advances, and NYC Opens First Legal Dispensary

As of February 14th, 2023, a new study led by researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine has found that CBD may increase the effects of THC in edible cannabis products, resulting in stronger, longer-lasting drug interactions. After administering a relatively high dose of CBD (640 mg), the researchers observed that the effects of THC were stronger, longer-lasting, and more likely to produce adverse effects.

In addition to the research on CBD and THC, the United States Senate’s Veterans’ Affairs Committee has advanced legislation to research the safety and efficacy of cannabis products for veterans suffering from chronic pain and post-traumatic stress. The bill directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to assess the ability to coordinate FDA-approved clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of cannabis flowers and plant-derived extracts in veterans.

In November, a study from Temple University showed that youth marijuana use increases after recreational legalization.[0] The study, to be published in the Addictive Behaviors journal in March 2023, is a reminder of the importance of regulation and keeping marijuana away from young people.[1]

On December 2nd, 2022, New York City opened its first legal recreational marijuana dispensary, Legally Rooted.[2] By February 14th, 2021, 21 U.S. states have passed recreational cannabis laws and legislatures in other states are considering similar measures. Most recently, the Minnesota House Education Finance Committee has approved a bill that would legalize recreational cannabis, with a focus on keeping cannabis away from young people. The bill includes child-proof packaging and labels, as well as Poison Control contact information.[3]
